5 Signs You Could Benefit from a Doula in Surrey

5 Signs You Could Benefit from a Doula in Surrey

When you’re preparing to welcome a new baby, it’s completely normal to feel a mixture of excitement, uncertainty and exhaustion – often all in the same day. Many new parents I’ve worked with across Surrey tell me they thought they had to do it all alone, especially after the flurry of midwife visits settled down. But the truth is, those early weeks at home can feel overwhelming, and having the right support can make all the difference. As someone who has spent years working alongside families both within the NHS and privately, I want to share five clear signs that you could benefit from having a postnatal doula by your side. These signs are based on real-life experiences, and if any of them resonate with you, know that you’re not alone – and help is available.

1. You’re Constantly Exhausted and Struggling to Rest

Sleep deprivation is one of the most talked-about parts of having a baby, but it’s also one of the most misunderstood. It’s not just about feeling tired – it’s about the ongoing lack of restorative sleep that impacts your mental health, physical recovery, and ability to bond with your baby. I’ve supported families where the parent hadn’t had more than two hours of uninterrupted sleep for days on end. By the time I arrived, they were surviving rather than living. If you’re finding it hard to rest even when your baby sleeps, or if anxiety is keeping you awake, a doula can offer gentle, tailored help. Sometimes it’s about practical solutions – like taking over baby care so you can nap, or resetting the home so you feel calmer. Other times, it’s simply about creating a sense of emotional safety that helps you relax and let go. According to The Sleep Charity UK, chronic sleep deprivation can increase your risk of postnatal depression, anxiety and delayed physical healing. A doula’s role is to support you holistically so that rest becomes possible – even if it’s just a few hours of deep, uninterrupted sleep that helps you reset.

2. You’re Feeling Overwhelmed, Anxious or Alone

Even in loving households, new parenthood can feel isolating. You might feel like everyone else has it together while you’re struggling with simple tasks like making a cup of tea or getting dressed. You might be putting on a brave face for your partner, friends or social media, while inside you’re full of worry. This emotional load is heavier than most people realise. Having worked with families all over Surrey, I’ve seen just how quickly overwhelm can build – especially when expectations don’t match reality. A doula is there not to judge, but to listen, reassure, and lighten the load in small, practical ways. I often describe it as being a calm presence in the storm. Whether you need a cry, a cuppa, or someone to hold the baby while you shower in peace, it all counts. NHS research has shown that postnatal anxiety affects at least 1 in 10 women in the UK, though the true number is likely much higher due to underreporting. Doulas can’t replace clinical support, but we often work alongside it – spotting early signs, signposting to trusted local professionals, and offering steady, non-judgemental support while you figure things out.

3. You Have No Nearby Family or Trusted Support Network

Surrey is a beautiful and busy county, but many new families I meet here have moved away from their parents or siblings. Others may have support nearby, but it’s not always the kind that feels helpful or non-intrusive. If you don’t have someone you trust to pop over when things get tough, the weight of doing it all yourself can feel suffocating. A postnatal doula offers consistent, reliable support that is centred entirely on you. Unlike a well-meaning friend or relative, I’m trained to notice the small details – the unspoken needs, the early signs of burnout, the subtle cues from your baby – and respond without overstepping. Families often tell me that having me visit feels like pressing pause on the chaos, resetting the day with just a few hours of focused, gentle help. If you’ve found yourself thinking, “I wish someone could just come and help without needing anything in return,” then you already understand what a doula can do.

4. Feeding – Whether Breast, Bottle or Both – Isn’t Going Smoothly

Feeding is supposed to be natural, right? That’s what the books say. But for many families, it’s one of the biggest sources of stress in the early days. Whether it’s nipple pain, poor latch, cluster feeding, low supply or confusion about bottle prep, feeding challenges can quickly sap your confidence. I’ve helped parents in Surrey work through every kind of feeding scenario – from exclusive breastfeeding to combi-feeding and formula with expressed milk. What’s needed is reassurance, practical guidance, and non-judgemental support. Sometimes all it takes is someone to calmly sit with you while you try a new position, or to clean bottles while you express, or to let you cry without making it a problem. A 2022 study by the UK-based Infant Feeding Survey showed that 8 out of 10 women stop breastfeeding before they want to, often due to lack of support. A doula’s presence can be the difference between giving up in frustration and finding your rhythm in your own time. I won’t tell you how to feed – I’ll help you feel confident doing it your way.

5. You Want to Feel More Confident – But Don’t Know How

Confidence isn’t something you either have or don’t. It’s something that grows, slowly and steadily, when you’re supported in the right way. Many new parents tell me they feel like they’re “failing” because they’re not instantly in love with motherhood or don’t instinctively know what their baby needs. I want you to know that’s entirely normal. It takes time to bond. It takes trial and error to learn your baby’s cues. You don’t need to be an expert from day one. What helps confidence grow is having someone walk alongside you who notices your small wins, who reminds you of what you’re doing right, and who helps you make sense of the fog. That’s what I do every day. Whether it’s showing you how to settle your baby without endless bouncing, guiding you through bath time, or just giving you permission to rest, it all adds up. As your confidence builds, you need less help – and that’s the goal. My job is to work myself out of a job.

Quick Signs You Might Benefit From a Doula

  • You’re too tired to think straight and can’t see a break coming

  • You feel unsure, isolated or like everyone else is doing better than you

  • You’re overwhelmed with feeding or recovery but don’t want to ask for help

  • Your partner is back at work or travelling and you’re managing solo

  • You want someone calm, experienced and trustworthy in your corner

If that sounds like something you’d benefit from, I’d love to hear from you.
